Santa Fe Children's Project is an ambitious, comprehensive project to address root
causes of disenfranchisement in one of Santa Fe's most vulnerable neighborhoods
and to reverse the downward spiral of generational poverty often found in such
neighborhoods. Making the family its focus, SFCP creates a continuum of
resources and services following children and their families from birth to
early childhood - a network of opportunities routinely available to more
advantaged citizens.
Vision: Success in School = Success in Life
SFCP's primary goal for the early-childhood phase of the Santa Fe Children’s Project is that all Agua Fria children enter kindergarten fully prepared with the
social/emotional, cognitive and motor-development skills they need to
flourish.
To achieve this, we have identified the following intermediate goals and
objectives:
1. Prenatal Health and Wellness
Goal
Pregnant parents and parents contemplating pregnancy are adequately prepared
for the birth of their child.
Objectives
| » |
Parents' behaviors support the prenatal health of their child with
knowledge of prenatal health and nutrition and about the effects of nutrition,
drug and alcohol use and general health status on the baby's uterine
development. |
| » |
All pregnant parents receive adequate prenatal care. |
| » |
Parents have realistic expectations of the impact of having a child
and make the sufficient preparations in their home environments to accommodate
a new infant. |
2. Infant and Toddler Growth and Development
Goal
Parents of infants and toddlers are effective in raising healthy and
well-developed children who are adequately prepared to participate in and
benefit from a high-quality learning environment at age four.
Objectives
| » |
Parents of infants learn about infant-parent bonding and behave in
ways that behave and maintain a healthy relationship between parent and child. |
| » |
Parents of infants and toddlers become knowledgeable about infant
health, nutrition and care, and they put this knowledge to use. |
| » |
Parents of young children become familiar with the typical stages of
child development and adjust their expectations of and interactions with
their children based on that knowledge. |
3. Early Literacy through Quality Preschool
Goal
All children demonstrate appropriate early-literacy skills so as to excel upon
entry into kindergarten.
Objectives met through Agua Fria Pre-Kindergarten or other pre-K
programs:
| » |
All children enrolled at age four achieve adequate motor-skill
development through appropriate gross motor and fine motor physical activities. |
| » |
All children enrolled at age four develop social/emotional competencies
in a developmentally appropriate play-based setting. |
| » |
All children enrolled achieve their maximal potential in
age-appropriate academic skills: the linguistic and numeric precursors to
literacy in reading and mathematics. |
4. Screening, Referral and Intervention for Special Needs Children
Goal
All children served by SFCP receive individualized services as needed in order
to function at their highest developmental capacity.
Objectives met through screenings during pediatric Well Baby visits, which uses Ages and Stages as a screening tool; at the Baby College through nurse-home visitations; and through the social worker at Agua Fria Pre-Kindergarten:
| » |
All children will be observed and assessed for cognitive,
social/emotional and motor-skill development. |
| » |
Every child who has special needs will receive appropriate and timely referrals
and all necessary therapeutic interventions to support appropriate developmental progress. Families with children with
severe special needs will be referred to an appropriate agency or individual therapist. |
5. Support for Daycare Providers
Goal
Area informal daycare providers offer high-quality programming that supports
school readiness.
Objectives
| » |
All home daycare providers in the SFCP target area will enroll in a
network that provides training, professional development and support for their
practices. |
| » |
All home daycare providers in the SFCP area will implement quality
programming in their own settings and thereby provide linguistically and
socially stimulating early care. |
6. Influencing State policy on Early Childhood
Education
Goal
SFCP and UWSFC have a positive impact on New Mexico early education policy as
we move into the second year of legislation and funding for universal, free,
early Pre-K public education.
Objectives
| » |
Create a model program that demonstrates cooperation and accommodation
between public and private early education providers. |
| » |
Assist the legislature in rewriting the current authorizing legislation
so that it better reflects the available research on effective early childhood
education. |
History
Santa Fe Children's Project is a revised and expanded program based on the work
of United Way of Santa Fe County's Success by Six Advisory Council - work
that received an Early Learning Opportunities Act grant in 2003.
